Triad

Complimentary

My thought process for my compositions was for all of the different photographs to go together, and be consistent.  I wanted one to be able to look at each of my photos and know that I took them all.  For the triad, I placed the bar at the bottom of the picture instead of the right side.  I thought this would be better for this picture because there was empty space there, and I needed to fill that section up instead of the right side.  Each of my photos are of specific things in nature that inspired me.  The first photo was of clovers to signify luck.  The second photo shows how winter is near because the autumn leaves are falling.  The purple flower in the third photo reminds me of beautiful Hawaiian flowers, and the fourth photo reminds me that Christmas is coming.  Together, I thought these photos showed variety and expressed my love of nature.

Shape and Composition

Photogram Diptych and Collage Composition

The shapes in my collage came from objects I saw around me and drew, including my shoe.  I cut out many shapes, and had an excess amount.  Through trial and error, I finally decided on how to layout my final collage.  In the dark room, I explored with different objects, lighting, and time.  With the help of a peer, I was able to find objects that would contrast my other piece.  The collage was very curvy and had rhythm, so I was looking for straight edged objects.  I decided on having the photogram demonstrate some movement as a different form, or style of rhythm.  The end composition required a lot of persistence and trials, but my techniques benefited.  The focus of shape also got myself to think outside the box and more abstractly.  Looking at my composition now, I am very pleased at the end result.  Everything I have done, all of the slight adjustments, payed off to form a composition I am very proud of.

Black and White Collage

Black and White Collage

Dark Room Preview

The black and white collage demonstrates balance, but has more negatived space than positive space.  For the second composition in the dark room, the piece will be of a crayon box overflowing of crayons.  The collage shows more smooth shapes, and the piece in the dark room would contrast by demonstrating sharp edges.  The new piece will also have more positive space compared to the collage, due to the many crayons that I will lay out in the dark room.

Wire Sculpture

Wire Sculpture.
USA Olympic Gymnast.

The sculpture uses line to articulate motion by the angle and proportions of the different parts.  The placement of the legs shows the graceful leap of the gymnast.  The arms stretch out as if it were flying.  The sculpture is the final product of my many drawings and sketches, and it shows how I have grown as an artist.  In the past, I have had trouble with proportion.  This sculpture shows how much better I have become at refining my artwork, but I still have a long ways to go.  It took a while to make my brain think in 3D and outside the box, but eventually new ideas formed and I was able to make my final product look slightly abstract.  My preliminary sketches did not have hair or a designed leotard, but as the project went on I was able to improve my basic sketches and come up with new ideas.  My sculpture turned into not just a leaping gymnast, but a real piece of artwork.
